The Birthday Boy

Almost a year ago, our little guy, Zeke, turned one! We think he is the cutest, so we wanted to show him off :)

After sharing lunch with family and friends, we indulged in yummy nautical themed dessert bar and whale-0f-a-birthday-cake all from the bakery…

Of course, Zeke enjoyed his own organic carrot cake making sure to get his veggies in for the day ;)

Happy Birthday Zeke! We love you <3

All The Birthday Boy photos are courtesy of Katie McGee Photography. Thanks Katie for chronicling Zeke’s first whole year of life and making the extra special effort to come out and celebrate his first birthday!

Mehndi and Pearls

Oh, the Richmond on Greene, how I love you! This venue will always be special since this is where my groom and I celebrated our marriage. Just like this cake was an instant favorite. So simple yet so detailed.

Julie & Alex, here’s to many years of simple bliss and full lives! Let me know when you need more anniversary cake ;)

Millions of Roses

What a gorgeous and smart couple…starting their marriage journey on St. Pat’s! See more of their big day at (Once Like A Spark) Photography to make you smile :)

Buttercream Beauty

For those of you who are buttercream purists and abstain from all things fondant, this cake’s for you.

…and what was left…

Thanks to Jeff Roffman Photography!

An Ocean of Ruffles

There is often no better inspiration for the wedding cake than the bride’s dress and this skirt was no exception.

Thanks to Yellow Umbrella Photography for the pro shots, and congratulations to Brandy and Andrew!

Charm and Treasures

The Ivins’ wedding was one of the weddings you’ll remember and reference for years to come. The colors, the flowers, the stunning bride…so many things just stick with you! When sketching the cakes for their wedding with bride Alex and mom Susie, they bounced ideas easily off each other, and we developed a charming vintage feel for the wedding cake. And for the groom Curt (which Alex is clearly smitten with!), bride and mom together schemed secret details for his alma mater Virginia Military Institute. In the end, I was entrusted with two irreplaceable items…the bride’s grandmother’s 1950s original wedding topper (which I was commissioned to restore!), and the VMI shako to help in replicating for the groom’s cake. Thanks to Jessica V Photography for the images!

Pics of the VMI shako coming soon to a Big Day Cakes blog near you!

Baby to Bee!

This baby is arriving in style if the shower is any indication! Every last detail was adorable! Thanks Rustic White Photography for sharing your pro shots!

Love the onsies!

Sweet Romance

This dessert reception was tons of fun to put together! Both bride and groom are sugar enthusiasts so we concocted every delectable treat you could think of from the wedding cake to croquembouche to milk & cookie shots! And of course, the guests were delighted because who doesn’t love dessert?!?

(ps. The very awesome pouf of baby’s breath from Charleston Street set the tone for a romantic night. Also, note the croquembouche in the back left of the cake. This is the traditional French wedding cake…talk about romantic!)

His Faithfulness Continues

Through all generations. A very sweet baptism cake for a very sweet little girl!

Strawberry Cake with Strawberry Buttercream

Little Miss Sunshine

Cake…

…and cookies…

…and goodies galore!
We supplied only the cakes and the sunshine cookies, but the whole table was so sunny cute!

Little Miss Sunshine herself smashing away!

Sitting Duck

Admittedly, there were more than a few thoughts of Steel Magnolias when sculpting this mallard duck of red velvet cake. A hunter’s dream for a perfect groom’s cake!

The very cool knife belongs to the groom’s grandfather, and while the entire story wasn’t procured, it surely must be a good one!

W is for Wedding

Love, love, love the mossy monogrammed Ws hanging on the entrance to the Lodge on Heath. Thought it nicely framed the bevelled square cake topped with the couple’s W just inside the door.

Whimsical spackled frosting in soft green

Nothing But Blue Skies

The couple was engaged in the rain, but married on the most beautiful blue skies day!

The ceremony and reception were held at quaint Perry’s Landing

Fishing for Love

For this happy couple, there could not have been two more fitting cakes. The wedding cake was sweet and classy just like the bride. And for the groom…

…well, he would rather be fishing. Except of course on his wedding day! Congrats Greg & Sam!!

Perfectly moist red velvet cake and delectable cream cheese frosting will guarantee they’ll be hanging around south of the Mason-Dixon line for a while!

And, why yes that is a tree stump amidst the elegance!

Thanks Saturated Simplicity for the great photos!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Oh Grayson, your first birthday party was quite amazing…the whole driveway decked out with colorful balloons, your very own (green!!) cake to smash into obliteration, and of course lots of friends and family to celebrate your first year!!

Everything the caterpillar ate through…

…and more snacks…

Did you get a look at the hand-painted leaf custom stand?? Mom and Dad plan on keeping it to remember year number 1!!

Pretty in Pink

Southern belle class and pretty in pink. Fun and girly details decorated rustic Enterprise Mills reception hall to make a gorgeous party for the wedding guests! The wedding cake featured designs reminiscent of the wedding dress including lacy overlays, rouching, and raw silk completing the look with handmade pink ribbons also worn by the flower girls!

Tomahawkin’ Groom’s Cake

No fair weather fans here. This groom still pulls for the Braves in the good years and the bad. So no World Series or Division Titles, but lots of German Chocolate cake to go around for all those celebrating a happily married couple!

Check out the hand-painted baseball cake stand

Black & White Birthday

What do you do when both of your parents are turning 5o on the same day?? Throw them an awesome surprise birthday party? We think YES!!! This classy number was for the lovely mother, and the children collaborated on dear ole dad’s cake (which turned out awesome…keep up the good work!). Look closely to see the stitching and pillowing on the top layer and the dramatic black on white scrollwork on the bottom tier.

Paradise Comes to Augusta

These two love birds joined in wedded bliss then celebrated with their guests at the River Room at St. Paul’s Church in downtown Augusta. The couple met in the Philippines and both fondly remember romance beginning under the coconut trees. Here in Augusta, their new home is surround with gorgeous magnolia trees. The cake ties in the beautiful beginning of their love story under the coconut trees and looks to their joyful future together! Best wishes you two!

Up, Up, & Away to Happily Ever After!

An absolutely whimsical, beautiful, so cute I found myself looking for the “Pin It!” button everywhere I looked at this backyard wedding! The cake of course was in the balloon theme with a string flowing down the tiers…and every single tier was chocolate chocolate chocolatey cake mmmm!!!

The heart balloon sailing on top of the cake

And because everything was so darn cute, more pictures of the backyard…

Love these!!

Zip Zip Zooray!!

Bronson is turning zeven!! Lots of Zs to celebrate this little man’s seventh birthday who happens to love the Zipper ride at the fair!

Three cakes stacked sky high equals lots of yumminess…red velvet, chocolate black gold, and vanilla birthday cake!

Vow Renewal in Middle Earth

For all those Lord of the Rings fans out there, you are going to love this! A lovely couple celebrating their anniversary by renewing their vows on, you guessed it, September 22nd. Now for true fans, you already know this is Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday. The vow renewal and reception was set in beautiful Boeckh Park in Hammonds Ferry at the fireplace by the river…cozy enough for any hobbit! What a celebration that even overcast skies could not dampen! Congrats you two on many more years to come!

Check out the Elvish language with the rings and The Eye. Also, note the awesome guest book…map of Middle-Earth!

Princess Party!

She may be only one, but she is certainly a princess! Lots of pink and lots of fun for this one year old birthday party!!

Smash cake for her Royal Highness

Thanks to McBride Photography for the awesome photos!

Grab the Chaps & Saddle the HOG

I’m thinking the Sportster might be the trick for me. And tough guys, remember just because you have a sweet tooth doesn’t mean your soft.

Beat the Heat!

When it seems like it just can’t any hotter, a Lemon Raspberry cupcake is the perfect antidote! Cool, refreshing lemon cake topped with lemon cream cheese frosting and fresh raspberry buttercream hidden within couldn’t be more satisfying. Guaranteed you’ll feel 26 degrees cooler instantly! And it’s a fruit serving…right??

Bob the Builder turns 70!

For a tool man, there’s nothing like getting a new tool, or spending an afternoon in solace amongst the tool collection, or perusing a catalogue full of seemingly useless looking tools. How do I know this…I’m married to the ultimate tool man! Who, by chance, crafted the very fun wrench-inspired cake stand. So while I don’t entirely get the tool fetish, I can appreciate the tool love from a distance!

Happy Birthday Bob! Hope it was the best ever and there are many more to come!

Nurse on Call

Celebrating a new chapter, a nurse employed “since the dark ages” at Palmetto Health in Columbia, SC retires. The cake was a surprise at the going away party. The pastillage retro nurse sitting atop the cake donned the iconic nurse-wear of years past and sported the lovely red hair of the guest of honor. Happy retirement…save a spot for us at the beach!

Ready for doctor’s orders!!

If you’ve ever had even a short stay in the hospital, you know the value of a great nurse! Thank a nurse you know today for all their hard work!!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Is there a new Metro Spirit newspaper stand in town?? Why, yes there is, but this one is full of red velvet and chocolate raspberry cake layers instead of the CSRAs hippest news. Come and get it hot off the press while the news is still news!

Beach Baby Under the Sun

First efforts to destroy the luau smash cake were very calculated, but by the end of it all, icing was from head to beyond the tiny toes! Fun and funny!

Of course all sweet little girls like to share with their uncles. Especially when their uncles teach big girl tricks like blowing out your very first birthday candle held by Little Miss Priss Octopus!

Diva from Day One

What better way to celebrate the impending arrival of a brand new baby girl than pearls, shoes, and a purse diaper bag complete with personalized logo?!

If the jewels, shoes, and handbags aren’t the perfect trifecta, chocolate petits fours will certainly make every girl’s heart happy!

The Lydia Project

Last year, Big Day Cakes Bakery helped raise almost $300 to support the Lydia Project. The Lydia Project was created by compassionate women in Augusta GA whose mission is “to serve women facing cancer by providing hand-crafted tote bags, prayer and ongoing support that women with cancer…ensuring women and their families are not alone during such a devastating time.” We plan again to donate again to the 7th Annual Dessert Auction coming up Thursday June 16th at 6:30 pm at the Richmond Hotel. Hope to see you there bidding generously to support this awesome cause!

It’s Good News Food

This Sunday, we were honored to contribute two delicious cakes to the Spaghetti Lunch and Dessert Auction at First Presbyterian Church. Each year the Youth Ministry hosts the event to help raise funds to support mission work. Next month, the high school students are planning to make a trip Salt Lake City, Utah to support missionaries Daniel and Stephanie McKinney in planting a church, while middle school students will be serving in inner city Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Beauty Abounds: A Night of Beauty Fashion Show

Thanks to Stella A Salon & Spa and Shoppe 31:30 for giving Big Day Cakes Bakery the opportunity to participate in such an awesome event! Stella and Shoppe 31:30 teamed up to host A Night of Beauty Fashion Show to raise support for the ministry of Shoppe 31:30. Shoppe 31:30 is an Augusta local non-profit ministry stating their mission as, “We offer women hope and self esteem through Christ Centered life and job skills training and professional suiting for women entering the workforce. Our desire is to be part of breaking the cycle of poverty, especially generational poverty, in the lives of women in our city.”

Big Day Cakes Bakery, along with many other local business, donated products and services for the night’s enjoyment or for auction to benefit the ministry. While the Raspberry Lemon Pucker Up Cupcakes were a hit, we are most proud to serve at such a great cause!
